What is the definition of a dependent child?

MN LIFE:  Dependent children are living with you and dependent on you for financial support as evidenced by your federal tax return.”

CHUBB:  “The Primary Insured Person’s unmarried child from the moment of birth, including natural child, grandchild, stepchild or adopted child from the date of placement with a Primary Insured Person.”

HARTFORD:  “A Primary Insured Person’s unmarried child, newborn, stepchild, legally adopted, in the process of being adopted or foster.”

Transamerica/Monumental Life:  The Primary Insured Person’s children include natural children, stepchildren, and legally adopted children. They must be primarily dependent on the Member for support and maintenance and live with the member in a parent-child relationship.”

What about the child’s age? What age range is included?

“Please check your certification of insurance since the age of the child covered will vary by state. We are happy to send you your certification of insurance if you need a copy.”

Can my handicapped child be covered? 

“The definition of a covered child is determined by the state the coverage is written under, but the child must be financially dependent on the insured. The final determination is made by the insurance company once a claim is filed.”
